PLAYING AROUND : AN APOLOGY

In a press notice issued and dated on the 28th May 2007 the Maritime & Coastguard Agency reported that assistance had been provided overnight to 3 yachts during a period of bad weather and suggested that the yachts had taken inadequate notice of the weather forecast.
Regrettably the facts relating to the yacht Playing Around were not double checked before release of the notice. The media statement was quickly removed from the MCA website once the errors were realised.
In fact, although Playing Around had contacted the Coastguard to advise of a minor problem onboard, the yacht was never in any danger and was able to reach safe haven without requiring any assistance. The yacht was well equipped and the crew were appropriately qualified and experienced to be sailing in the conditions.
Their prudent actions in notifying the Coastguard of a problem were absolutely correct, as was their decision to decline the offer of assistance from a lifeboat. The Maritime & Coastguard would like therefore to apologise to the owner of the yacht and his crew for the error.
